The Challenge

In a 12-story building, the emergency generator plays a critical role: ensuring a power supply in the event of an outage and maintaining the safety of the occupants as well as the continuity of operations.

During a service call at a customer’s site, our team was called in to evaluate a generator installed on the building’s roof following a major mechanical issue with the radiator. The diagnosis quickly confirmed a high risk of failure in the near future.

The situation presented several significant challenges. Since the generator was installed on the roof, access to the equipment was difficult, and any work required careful planning.

Temporarily replacing the unit also posed a major challenge: a conventional solution would have required a crane, complex logistics, high costs, and additional delays.

Added to this was a critical issue: no backup solution was in place to ensure emergency power for the building during the work. It was therefore necessary to act quickly, without compromising the site’s energy security.

The LM Solution

Thanks to our technician’s intervention, the radiator malfunction was quickly identified before it could cause major damage to the generator.

Rather than implementing a complex rooftop solution, our team proposed an optimized approach tailored to the site’s constraints: installing a mobile generator on the ground while establishing a temporary connection between the roof and the ground floor.

This solution required running temporary cabling from the roof down to ground level, allowing the mobile unit to be strategically positioned and placed on standby. The mobile generator could thus take over in the event of a failure, while the main generator’s radiator was removed for repair.

Once the work was completed, the necessary tests were conducted to confirm that the equipment was functioning properly and that the work met all requirements.

Customer Benefits

This proactive intervention helped the customer avoid a major breakdown of their backup generator, as well as a potentially much more costly emergency repair.

By choosing a technical solution adapted to the site, the client also avoided the costs and complexity associated with using a crane or performing roof-top lifting operations. The building’s energy security was maintained throughout the work, reducing operational risks and ensuring service continuity.

This approach successfully combined speed of execution, cost optimization, and technical reliability.

Thanks to a rapid assessment, effective team coordination, and a solution tailored to the building’s actual constraints, the client was able to prevent a critical failure of its generator.

A preventive intervention that demonstrates the importance of acting before a mechanical issue becomes an operational emergency.

This project demonstrates LM’s commitment to providing innovative and sustainable solutions.
